CATL reports quarterly results on Thursday, and investors will be on the look out for the extent the world's largest EV battery maker bore the brunt of the EV sales slowdown in China and rising pressure from automakers to cut battery prices. "This... is an incentive for CATL to offer some price cuts to secure its market share." CATL's setback also comes amid weakening EV sales in China that stoked an intense price war among automakers and a subsequent cost reduction pressure on battery firms and other suppliers. Shares in Shenzhen-listed CATL dropped 15% so far this year, lagging a 6% drop in broader market (.CSI300).

Smith said the committee is concerned CATL "may be trying to negotiate other agreements like the agreement with Ford." Republicans in Congress have been probing Ford Motor's (F.N) planned $3.5 billion investment to build a battery plant in Michigan using technology from CATL, the world's largest battery maker. The question is what precisely constitutes a "foreign entity of concern", and so far no foreign battery supplier has been labeled as such. Tesla, CATL and Nissan did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In July, Smith and Mike Gallagher, Republican chair of the Select Committee on China, demanded Ford answer questions about the CATL deal.

Ford CEO Jim Farley announces at a press conference that Ford Motor Company will be partnering with the worlds largest battery company, a China-based company called Contemporary Amperex Technology, to create an electric-vehicle battery plant in Marshall, Michigan, on February 13, 2023 in Romulus, Michigan. DETROIT – U.S. lawmakers are seeking to review a licensing deal between Ford Motor and China-based CATL that would allow the automaker to produce battery cells developed by the global supplier at a planned $3.5 billion plant in Michigan. The new batteries are expected to offer different benefits at a lower cost, assisting Ford in increasing EV production and profit margins. Several hundred of the proposed 2,500 jobs managed by Ford will be staffed by CATL employees from China until the licensing agreement expires in 2038, according to the letter. "Indeed, although the executives of the proposed project will be US-based Ford employees, it appears that the project will rely on CATL employees from the PRC to maintain operations in the long term," the lawmakers wrote.

But as local economic development officials worked with Ford and other prospective investors, it became clear they needed a much bigger footprint. The rest has been earmarked by economic development officials for suppliers and other developments. In Marshall, residents petitioned to hold a referendum on the project, gathering over 800 signatures in a city of 6,800. She believes factory workers will move to Marshall to work for Ford. He notes that the factory he works at, in nearby Battle Creek, has struggled to find skilled workers.

He said CATL would be able to mass produce a battery capable of delivering 400 kilometers of driving range with a 10-minute charge this year. The company aims to shorten that charge time to five to seven minutes for the same driving range as its next target, he said. Automakers and some suppliers have been racing to develop solid-state batteries that would offer greater power and increased driving range. Toyota (7203.T) said last month it had overcome an issue with the durability of solid-state batteries that would pave the way for production as soon as 2027. Wu said he was skeptical that solid-state batteries were ready for mass production and of the cost reduction claims.

A Model 3 starts at $40,240 and the price may fall to $25,240 when the $7,500 federal tax credit and another $7,500 from the California tax rebate kick in, depending on income and other requirements. SUPPLY CHAIN TWEAKSAnalysts said Tesla may have tweaked its battery supply chain to meet both battery mineral and battery component requirements for federal subsidy. Tesla used CATL's LFP battery cells for its Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive and nickel-based cells from an unidentified supplier for its Model 3 Long Range, analysts said. CATL and other suppliers like LG Energy Solution (373220.KS) do not have factories to make Tesla cells in the United States. Tesla has also started delivering China-made Model 3s and Model Ys to Canada, freeing up some capacity for U.S.-made models.

But the process is taking longer than expected, all three sources told Reuters. In early February, sources said CATL aimed to go ahead with the listing as early as May. Private placementThe sources said the Chinese regulator has concerns over the vast scale of CATL's GDR offering. At $5 billion, the GDR deal would easily be the largest such listing by a Chinese company in Switzerland, according to Refinitiv data. Chinese companies began listing in Switzerland last year after the launch of cross-listing platform to allow companies to raise capital by issuing and listing GDRs on the Swiss exchange SIX.

Three battery industry executives - including two at CATL - and two people close to regulators working with the industry told Reuters they understood Xi’s remarks as a warning to both the company and the wider battery industry. Consultant Rystad Energy estimates that battery production capacity in China will reach 1,338 gigawatt hours (GWh) by year end, up 23%. But EV sales in China have started to slow, prompting CATL to offer discounts to smaller EV makers in China in February in exchange for locking in future orders. EXCESS CAPACITY RISKZeng told investors in May that the recent wave of investment worth billions of dollars in battery production could leave excess capacity as technology evolves. CATL told investors that the partnership, which it said was based on "commercial considerations" has been moving ahead.

REUTERS/Thomas PeterSHANGHAI, March 7 (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping told CATL (300750.SZ) on Monday he had mixed feelings about its status as the world's largest battery maker - remarks that come at a time when the company is rapidly expanding abroad and moving to undercut domestic rivals. After a presentation by CATL Chairman Zeng Yuqun who described how the firm commands 37% of the global battery market, Xi was quoted as saying that he was "both happy and worried", glad about its leading position but concerned about the risks. "Emerging industries must do a good job in planning, figuring out how big the market is and where the risks are. CATL's shares fell 1.6% on Tuesday, in line with a decline in China's blue chip CSI300 Index.
Rystad Energy sees the global market deficit of lithium shrinking to around 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) this year, from 76,000 tonnes LCE in 2022. Out to 2025 it expects lithium supply to grow on average by 34% a year against an annual demand growth rate of 25%. MINERS UNFAZEDThe decline in lithium prices in China, the world's biggest consumer, has hit lithium producers overseas. LITHIUM CARBONATE SINKSThe price decline has been sharp. "A lithium carbonate price of 200,000-300,000 yuan per tonne is where both upstream and downstream will feel comfortable," said Rystad's Zou.
"It's very much a market share game," said Caspar Rawles, chief data officer at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd - more widely known by its initials - is the dominant global supplier with a 37% share of the EV market. For CATL, the discount is a way to head off a bid by Chinese EV makers to seek alternatives. CATL batteries power Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) I.D. "The reductions that CATL is offering would help the Chinese EV industry," said James Frith, a principal at battery-tech focused venture capital group Volta Energy Technologies.
Feb 16 (Reuters) - China will scrutinize Ford Motor Co's (F.N) latest deal with battery giant CATL (300750.SZ) to ensure the Chinese company's core technology is not shared with the U.S. automaker, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday. Ford did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for a comment, while CATL could not be reached outside market hours. Senior Chinese leaders asked for the extra scrutiny given the sensitivity of the deal and the current state of tensions between Washington and Beijing, the report said. Ford on Monday announced plans to invest $3.5 billion to build an electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan, with help from CATL's technology. Under the deal, CATL - short for Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd - will license the technology and technical assistance needed for Ford to produce lithium iron phosphate batteries in Michigan.
ARNSTADT, Germany, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Chinese battery giant CATL (300750.SZ) is putting down roots near the small central German town of Arnstadt, ploughing ahead with the ramp-up of battery cell production despite uncertainty over Germany's future relations with China. The Arnstadt plant delivered its first sample cells to customers in December and aims to have six production lines running this year. For now, the materials used are mostly imported from China, partly because CATL has long-term relationships with suppliers there. But some Chinese suppliers have set up shop in Europe near the Arnstadt plant, CATL's Europe president Matthias Zentgraf said in an interview. CATL will be the largest battery maker in Europe once its planned 100-GWh plant in Hungary reaches full capacity.
Morgan Stanley cut its price target on Tesla from $350 a share to $330 last week following the earnings release, citing unexpected headwinds in the fourth quarter and beyond. A weakening demand outlook for EVs and concerns over the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act have also already been priced in to CATL's stock price, Citi added. Battery boom HSBC has forecast demand for EV lithium-ion batteries to grow at a compounded rate of 32% into 2030. Meanwhile, Citi estimates global EV penetration will reach 55% by 2030. The bank sees global battery demand for EVs and energy storage systems to grow 62% this year and a further 29% in 2023.
SHANGHAI, Oct 11 (Reuters) - CATL (300750.SZ), a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) battery giant, forecast its net profit in the July-September quarter to nearly triple from a year-ago period, buoyed by rapid expansion in production to power the growth of EVs worldwide. The company is the world's biggest battery maker and accounts for more than a third of global EV battery sales. CATL, a supplier to U.S. carmaker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), expects its third-quarter net profit to increase to between 8.8 billion yuan ($1.23 billion) and 9.9 billion yuan, up from 3.3 billion yuan last year, CATL said in a stock exchange filing late Monday.
